I-Night Our very first I-Night for the academic year was successfully held on the 24 September 2009. The audience learnt more about two aspects about investing - technical analysis and psychology of investing - from the financial experts. Mr. Carey Wong, research manager of OCBS Investment Research, provided us a glimpse into the world of technical analysis. His session covered the basic indicators used by technical analysts, such as moving averages, trend lines and common indicators. Even though some may think that technical analysis does not account for the fundamentals of the stocks, we learnt in the session that technical analysis is based on the analysis of human behaviours instead of just simply looking at charts and indicators. As he puts it, "It is just like looking at the clouds, some may see it as a lion while some may see it as a horse". Technical analysis is about making your own judgement using the tools you have. To complete the picture of a successful investor, Mr. Paul See, Senior Branch Manager of Professional Investment Advisory Services Pte Ltd led us on a journey to discover the psychology of investors. Through various little quizzes and activities, he shared certain human psychology that may or may not lead to detrimental investing, depending on how one reacts. He also gave the participants a framework for investing that helps to minimise the impact of negative emotions on our investment habits. With the knowledge of technical analysis and the understanding of potential emotional pitfalls, most who were there have taken the first step into the realm of making money work for money.
