Successful Investment Strategies Frankly, I don’t know the holy grail of success in investment. The title of this post serves two purposes. 1. If there is anyone who comes to tell that he has some great investment strategy courses that help people make millions, just like those you see in papers and numerous trading courses, I hope you can ignore them. Why will I teach if I can simply make money myself? Altruistic? I remember attending this talk where this person is telling his indicator and he says that he loves teaching more than earning money. Later on, I found out that he had lost a lot of money between 2005-2007 and he was charged with illegal money management activities before. It is not that I don’t support the yellow ribbon movement, but I just can’t believe why people are so naïve. 2. I don’t know how many people can accept this notion but actually I feel that every method out there works. It is only a matter of which one works better than another and at some point of time I believe the environment allows for all methods to work. I’m pretty sure the Bull Run from 2003 to 2007 helped many trading course professional out there. I doubt 2008 will be the year that people claim that they have real good courses. In my opinion, most methods work because they have some pre-requisites that allow them to have some success rate. I don’t wish to go in details for the two traditional school of thought i.e fundamental and technical analysis, but over here you will realize that most build their strategies on really simple beliefs such as discipline and stop loss. If you were to read “market wizards” by Jack Schwager, most of the traders say that discipline is the most important tool that they possess. Surprisingly, they don’t give credit to their trading system. I am supportive of your opinions. If the "gurus" were to have a system that kept generating money, they won't let us know the secrets. Just like George Soros, he never let people know of his positions. Same goes to Warren Buffett, in his early years, he never disclosed his investments to the public; however, due to his sheer current size of capital allocated, he has no choice but to disclose his holdings to abide to SEC regulation. That's possibly one reason why he can't create double-digit growth now, the other reason is of course the gigantic size of Berkshire Hathaway. Here what I want to get across is that people won't tell us their secrets, if their systems really work. I agree that every system out there works, but only for a period of time in the financial market cycles, which consist of trending and range-bound periods. No systems can work for both types of markets. That's why there's no system that can make money all the time. What we need in order to succeed are a trading or investing plan, money management, risk management and, last but not least, our temperament and discipline of sticking to our plans, provided the plans are backtested with the risk of overfitting minimised.
